The Guitar as Art

Custom Ariel
Mike English originally commissioned this guitar in 1982. That is actually a mirror, made in that shape. It isn't a trick. Notice the edges of all the individual panels.
Ariel & Goodfellow (left)
A series of photographs by Keith Beardmore within a complex studio set - no retouching or computer enhancement, just lots of work.
The lanterns were picked out by individual spotlights - look at those shadows. Even the branches and lanterns are cut outs, not painted onto the background.
Falstaff (left) and Oberon
The lighting on these wasn't just to show the guitars, the shadows became part of the pictures. All the sets and props were hand painted and jig sawed from mdf sheet, by a local theatre designer.
Orsino (left) & Othello
Shadows, spotlights. I still have these photographic sets. With the amount of work involved, I could not throw them away!
Caliban & Egyptian (left)
Note the shackles for the 'Savage and deformed slave'
Model 42
The guitars here are Model 42 which we don't make now. Notice the mouse? Think Douglas Adams.
Mandolin Family
The 'sky' and two floor sections were individual plywood panels painted in perspective. The curtains are two more panels, with two more 'stage left'

Our Bass Guitars
Single Malt
Keith and I took these pictures at the 'Barrel Park' in Alloa in 2002. Empty casks from all the distilleries.
Single Malt
Single Malt Alexander
One of my favourite shots. That poor guy missed his tea break for this photograph, stood there in a cloud of steam for 30 minutes. Word of advice - never argue with a cooper. If he wants to help, he will. If he doesn't.
